- William Ruto has cancelled his planned weekend rallies in Makueni, Machakos and Kitui counties
- He cited the surging number of COVID-19 cases as the reason for cancelling the rallies
- The DP said he would also scale down on his political activities
As the number of COVID-19 cases in the country continue to surge, Deputy President William Ruto has called off all his public gatherings.
The DP who was set to hold public rallies in Ukambani area said he had reconsidered his plans and thought it wise to cancel the meetings.
He said that such meetings at a time when COVID-19 cases were surging would be equivalent to dousing fire using petrol.
“The upsurge in COVID-19 cases strongly indicates that a second wave my be in the offing. For this reason I have decided to significantly scale down my public engagements until further notice,” Ruto said.
He made the statement on his Twitter account shortly after the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) called for the banning of political gatherings and restriction of bar activities.
The medics blamed political rallies and unrestricted bar activities on the rising cases of COVID-19.
The DP was categorical that he would also scale down on his political rallies as a responsibility towards curbing the increased spread of COVID-19.
“The empowerment meetings for this weekend in Machakos, Kitui and Makueni are postponed,” he tweeted.
This comes even as Kenya recorded 12 more COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, November 3, bringing the total fatality to 1,039, since the first case was announced in March.
On the same day, 492 out of 3,728 people tested positive for the virus.
The number of people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Kenya has now reached 57,093 with a total of 708,33 having been tested.
