Mambrui

Mambrui is a settlement along the Kenyan Coast, located east of Marikebuni towards the Malindi Garissa road and south of Gongoni in Kilifi County.  Its a 30 minutes drive distance from Malindi town. It is indeed a hidden gem with spectacular views and Sand dunes. A lot of tourists flock Mambrui particularly for the breathtaking sand dunes and its crystal clear beach. However, archeologists and lovers of ancient architecture have reasons to also visit the village. In 2010, a group of Chinese archeologists discovered the remains of an iron smelter together with an iron slag believed to be from Long Quan, a precious kiln that made porcelain particularly for the royal family during the Ming Dynasty. There is evidence to suggest that Mambrui thrived in global trade in the 14th century with traders from around the world including the Chinese.

Mambrui also brags of dilapidated 14th century buildings that showcase a unique construction architecture, quick to notice are the uniquely built windows that slightly protrude from the wall surfaces, the high roofs and slightly raised floors. Its also worth mentioning that despite Mambrui being a village with slightly less than 400 households, it is home to around eleven mosques, setting the record for the village with the most number of mosques globally.

For those interested about getting to Mambrui Sand dunes, there are travel agencies offering transport from Mombasa and even Watamu. However, if you are in Malindi town, Tuk Tuk would be  the most appropriate means of transport, they charge between $4 to $6 one way ride, its also worth mentioning that there is a 500 meter stretch that you would need to walk on foot as its inaccessible for Motor Bikes, Cars and Tuk Tuks. We also have a few local guides who require tourists from outside the village to pay 200 Kenyan shillings per person which allegedly goes to the community and another 500 Kenyan shillings which goes to the tour guides. Be mindful of your dress code and especially your shoes when you visit Mambrui sand dunes as the sand gets very hot especially in the evenings, also carry some water to keep yourself hydrated.
