Immaculate Kassait will be Kenya’s first Data Protection Commissioners after MPs approved her appointment.
Kassait, the wife of Tiaty MP William Kassait Kamket was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta to take the new position on October 13, 2020.
Her immediate assignment will be to take charge of Huduma Number cards dissemination recently unveiled by Uhuru.
The report recommending her appointment was discussed in a special motion by the National Assembly’s Public Service Committee on Thursday, November 5.
During the debate, Garissa Town MP Aden Duale lauded Kassait as an experienced public servant.
Until the the time of the special motion was serving as an employee of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Kassait is the current Director of voter education, partnerships and communications at the IEBC.
During her vetting by the National Assembly Departmental Committee on communication, information and innovation that she would quit her job to end a conflict of interest that could arise if she gets approved for Data Protection Commissioner position.
Questions of Kassait’s marital status managed to come about during the motion with Duale categorically making it clear that she was not Miss but Mrs Kassait.
“Those raising that question should know that she is married to a him who is also a member of this house. If you want more details you can look for that member,” Duale said.
Jonah Mburu, MP Lari, had inquired the marital status of Mrs Kassait.
The MPs interrogated how the nominee answered questions before the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) committee.
Her job is guided by the Data Protection Act and the MPs prevailed on her to ensure efficient self-regulation among data controllers and processors.
She was also asked to ensure safety of Kenyans’ vital information by ending challenges like leakage of details to phone scammers in Kamiti and other fraudsters.
Kassait outshone 11 other candidates shortlisted for the position by the Public Service Commission.
She studied for a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Makerere University and has a post graduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law.
Kassait also has an executive Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the United States International University.Â
