For this specific tenant, the landlord crossed the line when he opted to increase rent in a dilapidated basement flat while most tenants were struggling with the Covid 19 pandemic. However, rather than relocating or accepting to abide by the rent increase, the tenant decided to expose the conditions of the flat to potential new tenants, showing them exactly what they would go through should they proceed to move in.
Katie who has a massive TikTok following, opted to make sure that no other tenant was exploited, posting: “Can u tell I live in a basement apartment with landlords that have the audacity to increase rent next year?”
She proceeded to give a tour of her house. One key highlight was the unblocker in the shower which revealed that the drainage was a mess as water didn’t drain without assistance, she also revealed the crumbling paintwork behind the bathroom sink which her landlord as often tried to cover up. On the shelves, she revealed notable cracks on the walls with one large crack on the wall, something that most tenants would specifically see as a danger to their stay in the house, something that could even trigger investigation by state housing agencies.
She received several positive comments with many thanking her for giving them an honest house tour.
