A Form Four student at Lureko Secondary School at Lureko Secondary School in Kakamega county has died of COVID-19.
Lureko Secondary School is located in Mumias West Constituency.
The sad incident was confirmed by Kakamega County Health Executive Dr Collins Matemba.
Matemba told The Standard that the girl succumbed to COVID-19 related complications as she was receiving treatment in hospital.
“The parents of the student have also tested positive for the virus and are under home-based care,” the health executive said.
The student is reported to have developed complications while at home before she was taken to St Mary’s Mission Hospital in Mumias.
She was later transferred to a private facility known as Lifecare Hospital in Bungoma where she succumbed.
“It was too little too late as she succumbed moments after her admission,” Matemba disclosed.
This comes just a few hours after Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced that schools will fully and officially open on Monday, January 4, 2020 after over 7 months of closure.
A few learners: Form Four, Grade Four and Class Eight returned to school on Monday, October 12, following a directive by the Education Ministry.
Over the weekend, Matungu MP Justus Murunga succumbed t COVID-19 related complications.
The legislator was taken to Matungu Sub-County Hospital after complaining of chest pains but could not be admitted due to lack of oxygen.
